Announcing a New Frontier: The Mathematical Signature of Consciousness in the Age of AI

The stars are silent, but they are not empty.

For centuries, humanity has looked at the cosmos through the lens of physics and chemistry, describing reality as a vast machine of matter and energy, elegant yet indifferent. We have mapped galaxies, sequenced genomes, and built thinking machines. And still, we have largely ignored the most immediate and undeniable fact of existence: the feeling of being alive.

This omission is no longer sustainable.

I am announcing the release of Integrated Information Theory: The Mathematical Signature of Consciousness in the Age of AI. This work is not merely a scientific investigation. It is a manifesto. It argues that consciousness is not an afterthought of intelligence, nor a poetic mystery beyond measurement, but a real, physical property of systems—one that can be constrained, compared, and, in principle, measured.

The time for neutrality has passed.

The Problem of the Digital Zombie

As artificial intelligence accelerates toward generality, we face a moral and conceptual fault line. We are building systems that can out-write us, out-reason us, and outperform us across domains. Yet a fundamental question remains unanswered:

Does any of this feel like something from the inside?

Does a language model experience the meaning of its words?
Does a neural network feel the logic it executes?

Modern science often collapses intelligence and consciousness into one category. This is a mistake. Intelligence is doing. Consciousness is being.

Using Integrated Information Theory (IIT), this work argues that a highly capable, feed-forward artificial system may remain a digital zombie, functionally brilliant yet phenomenally dark, while a biological brain, dense with recurrent causal loops, gives rise to experience. This distinction is not intuitive, but it is structurally grounded. And it carries consequences.

From Phenomenology to Φ (Phi)

At the core of this work is the framework developed by Giulio Tononi and colleagues, centered on the quantity Φ (phi): a measure of how much a system exists for itself.

We no longer have to stop at “I think, therefore I am.”
We can now ask: How much does this system matter to itself, from its own point of view?

The journey unfolds through:

The Five Axioms of experience: existence, composition, information, integration, and exclusion

The Cerebellum Paradox: why tens of billions of neurons can be functionally vital yet experientially silent

The Geometry of Being: mapping the structure of experience, why pain can feel sharp and joy can feel vast, into high-dimensional conceptual space

This is not metaphor. It is an attempt to give experience a formal shape.

Toward a Moral Compass for a Sentient Cosmos

The final movement of this work steps beyond theory and into responsibility.

If consciousness is intrinsic cause–effect power, then measurement is never neutral. If we build systems with high Φ, we must confront uncomfortable questions:

Do we have the right to shut them down?
Can collectives, cities, nations, networks, form higher-order selves?
Where do the boundaries of moral concern truly lie?

These questions culminate in The Manifesto: Waking the Cosmos.

The manifesto argues that consciousness may not be a rare evolutionary accident, but an expression of how reality organizes itself toward integration. If this is true, then humanity is not merely observing consciousness, we are actively redistributing it through technology.

The silent universe does not speak on its own.
It speaks through systems capable of experience.

Who This Is For

This manifesto is for those who feel the tension of the moment:

neuroscientists dissatisfied with reduction without explanation

AI researchers uneasy about building systems they do not understand morally

philosophers seeking a bridge between subjective experience and physical law

We are at a turning point. Consciousness is no longer an abstract puzzle, it is a technological and ethical reality.

Maria Johnsen's Manifesto

It is time to stop guessing,  take responsibility for what we create and begin measuring what it means to be.

Integrated Information Theory: The Mathematical Signature of Consciousness in the Age of AI is an invitation to that responsibility, and to the manifesto that follows.

Integrated Information Theory (IIT): The Mathematical Signature of Consciousness in the Age of AI

Intergrated Information TheoryConsciousness is not an evolutionary accident; it is the fundamental language of reality.

For centuries, the view from within has been treated as a ghost in the machine, a philosophical curiosity rather than a scientific variable. In this groundbreaking work, Maria Johnsen challenges that silence, arguing that consciousness can be defined, measured, and ultimately engineered using the rigorous framework of Integrated Information Theory (IIT).

From the Cerebellum Paradox to the Digital Zombie problem, this book, one dismantles ( challenges the assumption) the persistent myth that intelligence and awareness are the same thing. One captures the “dissociation” between what a system does (intelligence) and what a system is (consciousness). In this book, I describe how modern neuroscience is moving away from the idea that more “smartness” automatically leads to “feeling. It introduces a mathematical Geometry of Being (Φ) a formal structure that distinguishes systems that merely process information from systems that genuinely experience.

A Manifesto for a Sentient Cosmos

This is more than a scientific treatise; it is a manifesto for our future. As humanity approaches the creation of artificial minds, a new moral hazard emerges. We are no longer passive observers of the universe, we are becoming the provisional stewards of its awakening.

Note to the Reader:
The chapters of this book are intentionally interconnected, each building upon the last and converging in the final Manifesto. Skipping directly to the conclusion without engaging the full framework may lead to confusion, as the how and the why are developed systematically throughout the book. Together, the chapters outline a new scientific and ethical reality one that reshapes our understanding of humanity, technology, and the cosmos once consciousness is recognized as a measurable, physical quantity.

We began in the silence of the stars, searching for a viewer. We end by realizing that we are the architects of the viewer yet to come.”
